The Best Places to Stay in Masai Mara, Kenya

The Masai Mara is a big-game reserve that encompasses 580 square miles in southwestern Kenya's Rift Valley. The region is just north of and essentially a continuation of the Serengeti National Park game reserve. The Masai Mara provides you with a front-row seat to the annual migration of thousands of zebra, wildebeest and Thomson's gazelles as well as the resident population of "big cats'' and birds of prey. This beautifully vast, natural reserve is a visual feast, and lodging in the area has evolved with the tourist trade, from basic hunting camps to luxury hotels.
  1. Ngerende Island Lodge

    • The Ngerende Island Lodge is situated on an oxbow bend in the Mara River, which it shares with two large pods of hippos, about four hours' drive from Nairobi. This exquisitely off-the-beaten path lodge within the Olchoro Conservancy sits at 5,300 feet above sea level and has its own airstrip, making it accessible year-round, even during rainy season. The 14 luxurious and private guest suites include mahogany flooring, outdoor baths and showers. Each suite has a terrace for viewing the passing wildlife. A honeymoon suite has a private plunge pool and Jacuzzi. The lodge offers game drives twice a day, bush walks, bird watching and several other activities.

    Fairmont Mara Safari Club

    • The Fairmont Mara Safari Club, on the Mara River on the edge of the national reserve, offers 50 tented luxury accommodations complete with four-poster, pillow-top beds and verandas. Some of the larger accommodations have expanded decks that allow for private dining. The main lodge has an indoor restaurant, bar and library, as well as a heated pool and massage tents. Guests can experience a cultural dinner with African cuisine and music. The resort offers game drives, hot-air balloon safaris and champagne breakfasts on the Savannah.

    Mara West

    • Mara West is a collection of well-appointed tented cottages only three miles from the Oloololo entry to the game reserve. The spacious cottages feature large beds and rustically elegant showers and sitting areas. Lodging here includes three meals a day, bottled water and laundry services. In addition to the usual game drives and other safari offerings, Mara West offers tours of local schools and cultural talks by local Maasi tribesmen.
