Lodging on Richardson Highway in Alaska

The 368-mile-long Richardson Highway was the first major road built in Alaska, and runs from Valdez to Fairbanks. The area offers magnificent scenery, a plethora of recreational activities, such as fly-fishing, hiking and biking in the summer and skiing, snowmobiling and tubing in the winter, and offers numerous locations for viewing the Aurora Borealis, or Northern Lights, from September to March. Accommodations are prevalent along the route, consisting of mainly family-owned, bed-and-breakfast establishments.

    • The Bald Eagle Ranch, situated near Fort Greely, approximately six miles north of Delta Junction, features guest rooms, cabins, suites and mini-apartments with full kitchens, washing machines and dryers. All guest rooms are equipped with a king-size bed and private bathrooms. Enjoy a complimentary fully cooked-to-order breakfast each morning in the rustic dining room. Local eateries include the Buffalo Center Diner, Pizza Bella Restaurant and the Hard Wok Café.

    Brookside Inn Bed and Breakfast

    • Situated near Prince William Sound and the pristine ski slopes of Thompson Pass in Valdez, the Brookside Inn Bed and Breakfast offers a secluded setting off Richardson Highway. The inn has five guest rooms and one suite, all equipped with private bathrooms. In addition, the suite offers a large whirlpool bath. Guests can eat a free homemade breakfast served in the sun room every morning and cook their own catches in the evenings on the provided barbecue grill. Book a fishing charter at nearby Prince William Sound, and fish for salmon, halibut, grayling, and trout. Nearby restaurants include the Harbor Cafe, the Alaska Halibut House and Fu Kung Chinese Restaurant.

    Kelly's Alaska Country Inn

    • Located at the end of the Alaska Highway in Delta Junction, Kelly's Alaska Country Inn offers 21 guest rooms. Family owned and operated by the Kelly family since 1963, the motel features guest rooms with private bathrooms. Guests can walk to nearby gift shops, a supermarket and deli, several restaurants and the Delta Junction Visitor Center. Delta Junction offers views of the Aurora Borealis or Northern Lights during the months of September to March. The city is also home to the Sullivan Roadhouse and Historical Museum -- the oldest roadhouse in interior Alaska -- built in 1905.
