How to Live in a Van or Car

If you've been laid off from your job or, for whatever reason, cannot afford your rent or mortgage, living in your car or van may be your only alternative. Consider this circumstance an opportunity to teach yourself discipline, money management, organization and perhaps use it as an impetus to start anew. During a rough economy, you may have to make sacrifices, such as moving out of your home temporarily and living in your car or van to economize.

Instructions

    • 1

Equip your vehicle and prepare it as sleeping quarters. Purchase some window tint from an auto parts store and apply it to the back windows for privacy. Buy a window reflector for the front windshield to prevent people seeing into the vehicle. Experiment with folding the back seats down and using a mattress or foam pad to fit. Purchase a good quality arctic sleeping bag that can withstand temperatures below freezing.

Purchase a cooler for perishable food items. Also consider stocking up on non-perishable food items that need no preparation.

    • 3

Look for safe places to park your vehicle at night. Walmart parking lots are considered public property and are well lit places to park overnight. Also consider RV parks that offer showers, WiFi access, and laundry facilities.

    • 4

Find YMCAs or swim centers in your area. Use the locker room showers to clean up and maintain your personal hygiene.

    • 5

Prepare yourself for the lifestyle changes of living out of your vehicle and try to stay occupied. Stay later at your day job, or make use of public libraries to use the Internet.
