How to Transport a Car by Train

Shipping your car is a little complicated, but sometimes it makes sense. If you buy a car on Ebay, for instance, you might need it shipped to you. Most train companies will not deal directly with individuals. Instead, you must contract with a shipper who will ship your car by train. Check your phone book, or the Internet, to find shippers in your area. Get quotes from more than one.

Check with shippers in your area and get quotes. Some shippers have websites and will give quotes online. Check out the method of shipping. Some use open-air train cars that will expose your automobile to the elements; others use more expensive enclosed containers. If your vehicle is expensive, you might want to consider an enclosed container.

Prepare your vehicle for shipping. Remove any attachments such as bicycle racks or antennas from the exterior. Pack away any interior attachments that could be knocked loose during shipment. Tape down anything you want to stay in the vehicle, such as an antenna. Do not leave any valuables in the vehicle. Give a complete set of keys to the shipper.

Shippers advise not shipping your car with a full or empty gas tank. You will be charged by weight, so it does not make sense to pay for shipping a full tank of gas. The car may need to be moved, so it needs to have some gasoline in the tank. Shippers recommend a quarter tank or less.

Deliver your vehicle to your shipper. You will inspect the car with someone at the company to note any scratches or dents. You will inspect the vehicle again with the shipper upon taking delivery.
