How to Transport a Car on Amtrak

Amtrak offers a unique service to transport an automobile between Lorton, Virginia (about 20 miles from Washington, DC) to Sandford, Florida allowing you to avoid the hectic trek north or south on Interstate 95. The trip is 855 miles and just under 18 hours. You simply ride along in the Amtrak train while the train transports the car. This helps you to avoid the wear and tear of the interstate drive. The service is called Auto Train and with these specific steps, you will be on your way to less stressful travels down the east coast.

      Purchase your ticket. Call Amtrak at 1-800-872-7245 and ask the operator about booking a ticket for their Auto Train service or book online at the Amtrak website. The website will guide you through booking your ticket.

      Check in. The check in service is available once a day and begins at 11:30 a.m. and ends at 3 p.m. The last time available for check in of oversized vehicles and motorcycles is 2 p.m. SUV's and minivans can be checked in until 3 p.m. The train will then depart at 4 p.m. and arrive at the final destination at 9:30 a.m. the next day. Both single and round trip tickets are available.

      Ride the train with the car. Both coach seating and room bookings are available. You can ride in rooms with a variety of options, including bedding and showers. Meals are provided for both coach and bedroom bookings. A variety of different options are available.
