If you are renting a cabin, it may come stocked with some of the items you need, but you should always bring your own just in case. If there is no electricity in the cabin you may need a portable generator for lights and indoor cooking. Pack candles and battery-powered lamps. Extra batteries are essential for flashlights. Bring extra light bulbs if there is electricity. Always have a fully stocked first-aid kit as well. If it is cold outside, bring a heater and heavy blankets. Pack extension chords and power strips. You should also have a map of the area and compasses in case you want to explore the area.
You will have to bring your own food, but if your cabin has a refrigerator, you can pretty much bring whatever you like. Pack plenty of non-perishable snacks, however, in case you choose to go for a hike or plan to be outdoors all day. If coffee is essential to waking up in the morning, bring your coffee pot and favorite coffee. Bring any kitchen equipment you may need such as pots and pans, serving dishes, paper plates, utensils, cups and napkins. Also, bring condiments such as ketchup, mustard, mayonnaise and your favorite seasonings. Don't forget trash bags, paper towels, can openers and bottle openers.
Pack the proper clothing for the climate you will be in. Bring a heavy coat, hat, gloves and scarf for the winter. In the summer you should bring a least some long-sleeved shirts and pants for any treks into the woods. Bring a swimsuit if there's a hot tub or a lake nearby. A hat and sunglasses are essential in the summer to protect your face and scalp from sunburn. Don't forget a strong sunblock and bug spray. A raincoat and hiking boots should be included. Remember that, aside from clothing for the day, you will need casual clothing for lounging and sleeping in. Pack your essential toiletries such as soap, shampoo, toothpaste, toothbrush, face wipes, towels, washcloths and a blow dryer. Think of any personal item you use in your daily routine, such as medications or vitamins, and pack those, too.
Don't forget the items that will help you have a good time during your stay. Bring fishing gear if you are near a lake, and beach gear such as chairs and an umbrella for lounging on the lake shore. Pick up a big book you've been meaning to get into, and let your kids bring portable electronic games. Bring chess, checkers and other board games. Bring DVDs if there is a TV for a rainy day. You can also bring camcorder to record the memories of your cabin vacation.
