The landscape of New Mexico is breathtaking--from the more arid, desert-climate southern regions, to the mountainous north. New Mexico is the home of many lakes, where you can swim, fish, water ski and wakeboard. In the summer, you can get away to a resort near a lake.
The Lake Roberts Cabins Resort, located within the Gila National Forest, offers fishing, hiking, biking and scenic views of Lake Roberts and local wildlife. Lake Austin is an angler's destination; the lake is stocked with trout and catfish. Shrouded in pine trees, the furnished cabins offer porches with views of the lake and native juniper trees. Pets are welcome. Visitors will find horseback riding in the area. The resort rents boats. About 20 miles south of Lake Roberts is another lake filled with trout, crappie, bluegills and catfish. The Gila National Forest has several hot springs and is home to the Gila Cliff Dwellings. In 2010, cabins rent from about $70 to $125 a night.
