Decide when you would like to visit. Spring and fall are less popular times to visit, but the weather is often still warm enough for an enjoyable visit. Summer is the best time to visit if you plan to participate in water activities. If the weather is not an important consideration in planning your trip, you might want to consider a winter visit.
Select a park and cabin type. Standard cabins have bathrooms and kitchens, beds, chairs and tables and are usually constructed of logs. These cabins are heated with fireplaces.Modern cabins have heat, fireplaces and wood-paneled walls. They offer two, three or four bedrooms, depending on the park, and have full kitchens and bathrooms. Some cabins have air-conditioning and televisions. Modern cabins are more comfortable with upholstered furniture in the living rooms.Bungalows are one-room cabins with built-in bunk beds, kitchens and small bathrooms.Pioneer cabins do not have heat , electricity or bathrooms. They are equipped with gas lamps, wood-burning kitchen stoves, gas refrigerators and fireplaces.
Consider staying at one of the unique accommodations offered by the state parks department. Restored company houses and old railroad cabooses are available for rent at the Cass Scenic Railroad State Park. The park is centered on an old logging town and offers tours of a restored steam-driven locomotive.
Make your reservation. Reservations can be made by calling (800) 225-5992. If the park has a lodge, reservations can also be made online up to two years in advance. Each park has its own website for reservations. Reservations for other parks can be made up to one year in advance. The West Virginia State Park website contains a chart listing cabin availability for the upcoming month.
