1. Education: Candidates must have a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university. Relevant fields of study include criminal justice, natural resources, or a related field.
2. Experience: Candidates must have a minimum of one year of experience working in a law enforcement or natural resource management position. This can include experience as a police officer, sheriff's deputy, game warden, or park ranger.
3. Physical Fitness: Candidates must be in excellent physical condition and able to meet the physical requirements of the job, including passing a physical fitness test that measures strength, agility, and endurance.
4. Written Test: Candidates must pass a written test that assesses their knowledge of law enforcement procedures, natural resource management, and Yellowstone National Park regulations.
5. Oral Interview: Candidates who pass the written test will be invited to participate in an oral interview with a panel of law enforcement and park management officials.
6. Background Investigation: Candidates who pass the oral interview will undergo a thorough background investigation, which includes a review of criminal history, credit history, and personal references.
7. Training: Once hired, new park troopers will receive extensive training in law enforcement, natural resource management, and park regulations. This training typically lasts for several months and covers topics such as firearms, self-defense, wildlife management, and search and rescue operations.
8. Certifications: Park troopers are required to obtain and maintain various certifications, including state law enforcement certifications and certifications in the use of firearms and tasers.
9. Physical Requirements: Applicants must be able to pass a physical fitness test that measures strength, agility, and endurance. This includes being able to lift 55 pounds, run 1.5 miles in under 13 minutes, and perform other physical tasks.
10. Mental Requirements: Applicants must be able to work independently and as part of a team. They must be able to handle stress, make decisions under pressure, and work in remote and challenging environments.
11. Age Requirements: Applicants must be at least 21 years of age to become a Yellowstone Park Trooper.
12. Residency Requirements: Applicants must be willing to live in the park and work long hours, including weekends and holidays.
Applicants who meet all the requirements and are offered positions will attend the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center (FLETC) prior to reporting for duty.
