How long do you have to live in FL be a resident?

Florida residency for tax purposes requires living in the state for at least six months and one day of a full tax year. There are five elements of residency:

Domicile: Where a person has a true, fixed, permanent home and principal establishment, and a place to return to after an absence.

Place of abode: Your actual residence, where you live physically.

Business in the state: Regularly engaging in any lawful trade, business, or occupation in Florida, including as an employee.

Maintenance of a permanent place of abode in the state: This is satisfied if you meet the place of abode test.

Physical presence in the state for at least 183 days (six months and one day) or more during a calendar year.
