Great Exuma Activities

Great Exuma Island is the largest of the Exuma Islands, Bahamas, an archipelago of 365 cays and islands that begin 35 miles southeast of Nassau and stretch out in a southeast arc. Great Exuma is home to the capital of the Exumas, George Town. The island offers dozens of water- and land-based activities.
  1. Beaches and Watersports

    • Great Exuma is home to several white sand beaches that are great for swimming and picnicking. These include Tropic of Cancer Beach, Three Sisters Beach, Jolly Hall Beach, Coco Plum Beach, a good beach for shelling, and Hamburger Beach, which is popular for volleyball. Snorkeling and scuba diving are also popular activities on Great Exuma, with its clear waters and abundant marine life. The island has several places for cave diving, including Thunderball Grotto, Crab Cay Crevasse and Angelfish Blue Hole.

    Fishing

    • Great Exuma is a great base for fishing the Exuma Islands. The flats on Great Exuma's west side are famous for bonefishing, which consists of using fly fishing techniques in a shallow area to catch bonefish. Each fish can weigh up to 15 lbs., and locals say they put up the best fight, pound for pound, of any fish. Exuma Sound is a popular place to fish for blue and white marlin, sailfish and wahoo. Guides and equipment for all types of fishing are available in Georgetown.

    Boating and Sailing

    • The Exuma Islands are a sailing and boating paradise, with hundreds of secluded and deserted islands and cays just waiting to be explored. Great Exuma is a base for exploring the archipelago. Great Exuma is a good place for beginning boaters, because much of its north shore is sheltered from the open sea by Stocking Island. Boaters and sailors will enjoy seeing a wide variety of sea life in the crystal clear waters, since most of the archipelago is undeveloped.

    Georgetown

    • Georgetown, located on Great Exuma, is the capital of the Exuma Islands. The seaport, which was home to pirates in the 17th century, now has around 900 residents, and is popular with yachters. The city's major landmark is its pink and white Government Building, similar to the Government House in Nassau. Georgetown has shops that offer Bahamian crafts, such as straw baskets and ceramics. The 2-acre Lake Victoria in the city's heart offers opportunities for boating, sailing and sea kayaking. Golfers will enjoy the Greg Norman-designed course at Four Seasons Emerald Resort Golf Club.
