Pack enough summer clothing for at least a month. Bring jeans, shorts, swimwear, short-sleeve shirts, T-shirts, sneakers and sandals. Underwear and socks are also imperative. A sweater can be useful in cold lecture halls. At least one item of formal clothing could be beneficial if you plan to attend a formal event hosted by the school.
Because you will carry large, heavy textbooks, it's important to bring a backpack or other school bag that is built to last. Items such as binders, pens, pencils, index cards, highlighters and notebooks can be found on any island. However, you should bring a few supplies so you'll have time to get settled. Bring your laptop and consider having a printer shipped to you. Also be sure to purchase one or two white lab coats and medical scrubs.
If you have a health condition that requires medication, bring at least two to three months of drugs. You may be too busy at school to find a nearby pharmacy and order refills. Plus, getting refills will depend on the availability of the drug. Additionally, Caribbean-bound medical students should bring a first-aid kit. An anti-diarrheal drug is also necessary as your body may need some time to adjust to the local food. Similarly, anti-bacterial and antibiotic products are essential.
Bringing a pillow, alarm clock, shaving cream and shaving sticks will reduce the number of things you have to buy on the island. The Caribbean has lots of sunshine, but it also has lots of rain. Remember to bring an umbrella or raincoat and a hat.
