Dial 011. This is the International Access Code in the United States, necessary for overseas calling.
Dial 81, which is the country code for Japan.
Dial the appropriate city code. If you don't already have this number, you can look up Japanese city codes online. Note that cell phones in Japan have the city code 090.
Dial the destination eight-digit phone number.
