How to Change a Luggage Wheel

Wheel-Only Change

  Pry off or unlock and remove the wheel hubcap, if applicable, to expose the screw or bolt.

  Unscrew the securing hardware with a screwdriver, hex key or wrench. Set the hardware aside.

  Pull the wheel from the axle. Set it aside for disposal.

  Slide the new wheel onto the axle, and tap it in place with a rubber mallet, if necessary. Secure the wheel with the hardware.

Wheel Assembly Change

  Remove the multiple screws or bolts that hold the wheel assembly in place. Set the screws or bolts aside. If the wheel rests inside a wheel housing, insert the assembly inside of the wheel assembly, remove only the screws or bolts that hold the insert in place.

  Set the assembly aside for disposal. If you're dealing with a wheel housing insert assembly, remove it from the wheel assembly, turn it on its side and push the tip of a slotted screwdriver against the end of the axle to push the axle out of the insert on the other side to release the wheel. Set the wheel aside.

  Align the holes on the new assembly with the holes on the luggage, and then secure in place with the hardware. If dealing with an insert, place the wheel in the insert with the center hole on the wheel aligned with the holes on either side of the insert, push the axle through the holes, and then screw the assembled insert and wheel back into place in the wheel assembly.
