How to Dissasemble a Landing Gear Wheel Assembly

Most aircraft maintenance must be performed by, or under the direct supervision of, an FAA-certified mechanic. Disassembling a landing gear wheel assembly is one item that falls under the category of preventive maintenance. As such, a pilot can perform this task on his own airplane. Each aircraft model has different procedures specified in the maintenance manual. The pilot must follow these procedures to minimize personal injury or damage to his aircraft.

Things You'll Need

  • Aircraft maintenance manual
  • Aircraft jacks
  • 3/8 inch ratchet driver
  • 3/8 inch standard socket set
  • Standard combination wrench set
  • Small flat blade screwdriver

Instructions

    • 1

Pull your aircraft into a hangar sheltered from the wind and from prop wash from passing planes. This ensures that your plane will not be blown off the jacks.

    • 2

Pump each jack up a little at a time. This evenly jacks your aircraft into the air. Lock the jacks once the wheels are off the ground. Lock the jack by placing a pin through the lowest hole on the ram, ensuring that the jack cannot be accidentally lowered.

    • 3

Release all the air from the tire by depressing or removing the stem valve. Aircraft wheel assemblies are made in two bolted-together pieces, with the tire and tube in the middle. There is a danger of severe injury and death if a damaged wheel is removed from the axle without first releasing the tire's air pressure.

    • 4

Remove a main-gear wheel by first removing the brake lining assembly bolts. This disengages the brake lining assembly. Place the now-disconnected brake lining assembly off to one side. The brake caliper assembly, located on the inboard side of the wheel, can remain in place. Some aircraft have more than one caliper assembly.

    • 5

Remove the cotter pin that locks the large wheel-assembly nut. This nut secures the wheel assemblies to the axle. Once the cotter pin has been removed, remove the large nut with an open-end wrench.

    • 6

Pull the wheel assembly off the axle. Place the wheel assembly on a clean work bench.

    • 7

Free the tire bead from the wheel flanges. Complete this task by applying even downward pressure to the tire as close to the wheel assembly as possible. Do not use a prying action between the tire bead and wheel; this can damage the wheel.

    • 8

Loosen and remove the bolts holding the two halves of the wheel assemblies, using a wrench and a ratchet drive with socket. Lift one part of the wheel assembly off the other. This frees the tire and tube from the two wheel halves.

    • 9

Use a small screwdriver to pry free the lock ring that secures the bearing seal in place. Each wheel half has a bearing seal, cone and cup. The bearing seals are located at the point at which the axle passes through the wheel. Lift out the bearing seals and bearing cones.
