The Gatlinburg Space Needle is a slimmed-down version of its Seattle counterpart, rising just over 400 feet to tower over Gatlinburg. It's located right on the strip, where hotels, restaurants and bars operate all within close proximity. Two elevators shuttle visitors to and from the observation deck, which has the best view in Gatlinburg: A 360 degree panoramic of the city, its downtown area, and the Great Smoky Mountains that stretch in all directions.
The deck is even outfitted with free viewfinders. The observation deck isn't the only feature of the Space Needle. The Flying Saucer Italian Bistro is also located there, serving pizza and pasta in a family-friendly atmosphere. At the base of the needle is Arcadia, a 25,000 square foot, two-story amusement center and arcade. Here, kids can enjoy everything from extreme laser tag to a hypnotism theater show.
In 1961 the Gatlinburg Ski Resort opened its doors for the first time. After many additions and expansions, it exists today as the Ober Gatlinburg Ski Resort and Amusement Park. It is one of the most visited attractions in the Gatlinburg area. Nine ski trails are available, each one varying in its terrain, giving options for everyone from novice skiers to masters of the sport. These trails are serviced by four lifts and a state of the art snowmaking system. Separate tracks are available for anyone interested in snow tubing, as well.
Other activities at Ober Gatlinburg include ice skating, sightseeing on the aerial tramway, mini golf, kiddie rides and a winding water slide. The on-site restaurant and lounge offers views of the mountains alongside plenty of down home favorites, from fried catfish to chili. This is an excellent attraction for the whole family.
With all the natural beauty surrounding Gatlinburg, it would be a crime not to explore what's offered there. That's where Outdoor Adventures Gatlinburg comes in. They offer a variety of exciting and unique ways to see the Great Smoky Mountains. A number of helicopter tours offer everything from aerial views of Gatlinburg to trips to Clingman's Dome, Bluff Ridge or Pigeon Forge.
Balloon rides are an alternative aerial adventure offered by the company. On land, rides on horseback, ATVs, monster trucks and Hummers are alternatives to the traditional nature hike and offer excitement as well as a venture to the outdoors. Adrenaline junkies can also enjoy whitewater rafting on the Pigeon River.
