Inexpensive Restaurants on City Island, New York

When visiting City Island, it can be hard to imagine that you are still in the limits of New York City, since much of this Bronx island feels like a small New England town on the seafront. While the island is home to a number of up-market restaurants specializing in locally caught seafood, there are also a few affordable dining establishments for visitors on a budget.
  1. Johnny's Famous Reef Restaurant

    • As of 2010, most of the main dishes at this seafood restaurant fall under $10. Johnny's Famous Reef Restaurant has received high marks from the likes of Gayot, New York Magazine and Time Out. Sample menu items include frog legs, hamburgers, hot dogs, clam chowder, fried lobster tails, fried shrimp, fried calamari and little neck clams on the half shell. The restaurant has been in business since 1950 and is located right on the boardwalk, making it something of a City Island landmark.

    Original Crab Shanty Restaurant

    • Original Crab Shanty Restaurant specializes in Italian-style seafood. As of 2010, there are a number of main dishes on the menu below $20; some of these include crispy fried chicken, fresh blue fish, farm striped bass, fresh trout, whole flounder, fresh scrod, fresh tilapia, juicy fried oysters, linguine marinara, fettuccine alfredo, shrimp scampi, fried jumbo shrimp, barbeque chicken, chicken marsala and veal Parmesan. The restaurant also has a children's menu and offers daily lunch specials.

    The Black Whale

    • As of 2010, most of the main dishes offered at the Black Whale are priced under $20. Re-opened in 1998, the original restaurant has a history dating back to the 1960s. Typical menu items include grilled New York sirloin with mashed potatoes, slow cooked barbeque baby back ribs with mashed potatoes and corn on the cob, sauteed chicken breast with cognac peppercorn sauce, meat loaf with red wine onion sauce and penne a la vodka. As with most City Island restaurants, the Black Whale also offers a range of specialty seafood items, such as shrimp scampi, pan-roasted scallops with a sweet corn and red onion-basil relish and pan-seared salmon. Each Sunday, the Black Whale offers a brunch buffet.
