As of 2010, most of the main dishes offered at the Black Whale are priced under $20. Re-opened in 1998, the original restaurant has a history dating back to the 1960s. Typical menu items include grilled New York sirloin with mashed potatoes, slow cooked barbeque baby back ribs with mashed potatoes and corn on the cob, sauteed chicken breast with cognac peppercorn sauce, meat loaf with red wine onion sauce and penne a la vodka. As with most City Island restaurants, the Black Whale also offers a range of specialty seafood items, such as shrimp scampi, pan-roasted scallops with a sweet corn and red onion-basil relish and pan-seared salmon. Each Sunday, the Black Whale offers a brunch buffet.
