Ask your child to choose a small bag or backpack. The bag should not be so large the child is unable to carry it herself. Parents can choose a sufficient bag or backpack for infants and younger toddlers. Having a special bag specifically for trips can help get your toddler involved and interested in the process.
Allow your child to pick several toys or games. Seven to 10 items would be sufficient for an average trip of three to four hours. Parents should choose appropriate objects for infants, such as board books, rattles, and teething rings. Toddlers should be given choices, such as crayons, books, paper or stuffed animals.
Place the items in the bag, putting the heaviest items on the bottom. Snack food and drinks should be placed in a cooler or sandwich bag to prevent leakage. A wet and messy travel kit will not provide entertainment for a child. Older children can pack the bag themselves but a toddler should be supervised during this process.
A portable DVD player or hand-held video game makes a long trip bearable. Be sure all cords are properly connected before departure. Keep the volume low to avoid distracting the driver or other travelers; headphones can eliminate this problem.
Take pillows and favorite blankets. Traveling will wear out even the most energetic child. He will sleep more comfortably with familiar objects. Pacifiers will help your infant sleep and can relieve ear pressure if traveling by air. Pack chewing gum for older children.
