How To Prepare for Your First Mission Trip

Much time should be spent in prayer before one makes a decision that God is calling them to go on a mission trip. Once that is confirmed, and a destination has been chosen, you will need to begin preparing for your first mission trip. If you are not prepared, you will leave for your trip feeling overwhelmed and stressed. Preparing allows you to spend your time focusing on the mission, and your purpose for going.

Things You'll Need

  • Passport
  • Visa
  • Vaccinations
  • Money
  • Destination information
  • Class or books on witnessing

Instructions

    • 1

Fill out the required documents to obtain a passport if you don't already have one. You should also check to see if you need a visa, and apply for one if you do. It is important to do this first, because these documents take time to get.

    • 2

Go to the US Department of State's International Travel website and click on the country you plan to go. Then click on the specific region. Finally, choose the "Entry/Exit Requirements" link to find out what vaccinations are needed to enter that country, as well as any other required documents.

    • 3

Meet with your mission team to discuss how the money is going to be raised, and what your part is in raising it. You should also find out when the money is due. Some mission trips require a certain amount of money upfront, and the rest when you are ready for departure.

    • 4

Research the area where your mission trip is set to take place. Note what the temperature is like so that you can pack appropriate clothing. Learn a little bit about the culture in that country, and if possible learn to speak a few words. This will help you communicate better when you get there.

    • 5

Read a few books, or take a class on witnessing. There are going to be hurting people in need of a Savior where you are going, or you would not be going there. It is best to be prepared on how to lead someone to Christ. This should be one of the main focuses of your group.

    • 6

Get together with the mission trip team and organize the extras that you plan to bring. You may be bringing clothing and shoes for the children of that country, or you may be packing bibles to hand out. If you are going as a medical mission trip, you may need to get donations of medical supplies to bring along.

Download and review the International Mission Board's Preparation Guide. In it you will find a suitcase checklist, vaccination checklist, and even a 30-day spiritual preparation list.
