A visa is a legal document that is granted to give someone permission to travel to another country and stay for a specific amount of time. The visa is used in conjunction with a passport in order to prove residency of a country. Visas expire after a specific period, but can be extended with permission. Some countries require that you leave the country and re-enter under a new visa. In Australia, you may request a visa extension.

Fill out a new application online at the Australian Visitors Bureau website. You will need information from your passport in order to complete the application. Your visa will be linked to your passport number in order for the visa to be valid.
Submit the application and pay the required fee by using a credit card. Your visa application is usually processed immediately and you will receive instant results that your visa has been extended. You are only allowed an extended stay in Australia for three months at a time. If you have reached this three months you may leave the country for three months and come back for an additional stay.
