How to Convert a Couch to a Sleeper Sofa

Adding a sleeper sofa or futon to your living room creates extra space and a place to host overnight guests. Functional as a couch during the day, and a bed, usually big enough for two people, at night, this piece of furniture will save you space and save your guests the nightly hotel rate. In a sleeper sofa, the bed is lodged underneath the cushions of the couch, and it is usually folded into three when in the sofa position. A futon, however, is usually just a mattress folded in half and turned to an upright position during the day.

Things You'll Need

  • Mattress pad
  • Fitted sheet
  • Flat sheet
  • Blankets
  • Pillows

Instructions

  1. Sleeper Sofa

    • 1

Remove pillows and seat cushions from the couch.

    • 2

Use the handle or edge of the folded-up bed to pull the frame horizontally toward you.

    • 3

Pull until the bed frame is fully unfolded from beneath the couch and two of its legs are firmly placed on the ground.

    • 4

Grab the top of the frame and unfold it. The legs of the bed will unfold as well, securing the whole length of the bed on the ground.

    • 5

Attach a mattress pad and a fitted sheet to the mattress on the bed.

    • 6

Cover the fitted sheet with a flat sheet and blankets.

    • 7

Place bed pillows at the head, or use the sofa's side pillows.

    Futon

    • 8

Pull the bottom of the futon frame gently up and toward you, releasing the frame into a lounge position.

    • 9

Pull the frame horizontally toward you to extend it into the flat bed position.

    • 10

Cover the mattress with a fitted sheet.

    • 11

Add flat sheets and blankets on top of the fitted sheet.

    • 12

Place pillows at the head to complete the bed.
