How to Book a Flight With Your Pet

Sixty-two percent of households in the United States own pets, as reported in the 2009/2010 National Pet Owners Survey, and pet travel in America is a growing trend with families looking to bring their four-legged members on vacation. The FAA allows each airline to determine whether or not to accept pets in passenger cabins, and those that do consider pet carriers carry-on luggage. Service animals assisting owners with disabilities are not considered pets. For further pet travel requirements, check the United States Department of Agriculture's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service website.

Instructions

  1. Book a flight with your pet

    • 1

Research which airlines allow pets and call your pet-friendly airline of choice. Regulations for pet travel, such as which pets are allowed in the passenger cabin or luggage compartment, differ from airline to airline.

    • 2

Give airline operator your departure date and city, arrival destination, and your return date. Allow room for flexible travel dates as there are pet limits on flights.

    • 3

Give airline operator your personal information: name, address, phone number and email address (optional), plus your pet's information.

    • 4

Give airline operator your credit card information for payment. Pet travel is not cheap, and pricing is determined by airline. Also, many airlines require a certificate of health obtained within two weeks of travel. Keep that in mind when figuring out the cost to fly with your pet.
