People of all ages can forget where they put their car keys. There are a variety of scientific theories explaining why we forget. The theories range from psychological or brain disturbances, all the way to diseases like dementia. The bottom line for most of us is that we just want to find a method that will eliminate forgetting where our keys are.
Start making organization a part of your life. There should be a designated location for all items in your home. Just like you have to park your car in a designated spot to avoid towing or worse, your keys should have a designated location, as well.
Stop any interruptions that interfere with you getting an object to its designated location. That's right, you can always say "Wait a minute, be right with you...", to ensure you complete a particular task like this.
Add structure to your life so that putting certain objects in its designated location becomes part of your daily routine. For example, if you live in a city loft and your car is stored in the loft, maybe your keys belong on an adjacent wall, where your car is stored. If you live in the suburbs and you park your car in your garage, then maybe you should put a hook in the garage and place your keys on it before entering the house.
Leave room for error. We are human, so what happens if you do not put your keys back in its designated location? Easy answer: Go get the spare set of keys you made. Always make a copy of your car keys and keep them in a place that the dog, children or spouse will not find them.
Never keep your keys in your car; someone will eventually lock them in the car.
Stop being so hard on yourself for forgetting and start understanding why we forget. When we understand why something happens, we are more effective at stopping it from happening.
