How to Transport Pets to and From Mexico on the Airlines

Most U.S. airlines that allow pets to travel either in-cabin or in the cargo hold allow the same types of pets to travel to and from Mexico, keeping to the same restrictions with comparable fees. Making sure your pet is secure in an approved carrier, has all its needed vaccinations and papers and is properly identified, makes your journey to and from Mexico much smoother.

Things You'll Need

  • Airline-approved pet travel bag
  • Vaccination documents
  • ID tags

Instructions

    • 1

Call the airline to make a reservation for your pet. Most airlines allow two or three pets in-cabin and differ on the available space in the cargo hold reserved for pets. Pets allowed in-cabin are limited to less than 20 lbs. and generally only include cats and dogs; sometimes birds are allowed. Inquire about breed restrictions in the cargo hold, and determine if the heat or cold will adversely affect your pet.

    • 2

Purchase the required carrier for your pet. For both cabin and cargo carriers, make sure it can stand up with legs fully extended inside its carrier and make a full turn around. For in-cabin pets, buy a carrier that fits easily under the seat in front of you, because you are required to store the carrier there in flight. Exact allowed measurements vary per airline. When purchasing the carrier, bear in mind that you have to carry your furry friend through hours of security lines.

    • 3

Take your pet to the vet for a check-up, and ask for a health certification for traveling. Most vets charge a fee for this. The certificate is generally valid for a year.

    • 4

Update ID tags for your pet's neck and its carrier with all current contact information including your phone number, its name and your name. Include your address on the carrier and any vital health information such as allergies and behavioral traits.

    • 5

Place your pet's favorite toys, blanket or pillow in the carrier with it. Give sufficient food and water the day before. Place your pet on restricted food and water for the 12 hours before travel. Take it out for a bathroom break immediately before the first flight.

    • 6

Pay the required pet fee at the counter upon check-in. Prepayment may be available when you make your reservation. Keep your receipt to show the agents at the gate and the Travel Security Administration officials.
