Traveling on Airlines to Mexico With Pets

If you are going to travel on an airplane to vacation in Mexico, there are several preparations you must make and requirements you must observe. Pets are allowed on airlines but must be kept in a safe place as to not endanger the animal or other travelers. If your pet is small and can fit under the seat it may board the airplane as a carry-on. If it is larger it will be shipped as cargo. There are hot and cold weather restrictions on allowing pets in the cargo compartment.

  1. Identification

    • Make sure your pet has proper tags with your name and permanent address and phone number on them. Also bring any health certificates of vaccinations or veterinarian records. A Zoo Sanitary Certificate is a document your vet can give you for international travel. Sometimes an import permit is required for certain animals. Call the airline in advance to inquire about documentation regulations.

    Hydration

    • Inside the cage or carrying cabinet that your pet is stored in, place ice in a bowl which will gradually melt during the trip and provide water to the pet. The slowly melting ice is less likely to cause large spills and guarantees the pet access to water throughout the flight.

    Food

    • By making sure your pet is well fed before boarding the flight there is no risk of animal experiencing severe hunger during the flight. Most trips from the United States to Mexico are only a few hours in length and do not pose any risk to the animal. A couple of chewable food sticks can be purchased from the pet store and provide a snack en route. These do not spill or come out of the cage compartment as dry dog food might.
