List of Things to Do in New York City & Manhattan

As America's largest city, New York is also one of its most popular. Every year, more than 45 million from the United States and around the world visit. It is easy to see why, with so much to do and see, even an entire week in New York only gives visitors a inkling of what the city is actually like. To make the most of their vacation, visitors should sample a bit of everything and then find a special part of New York they can call their own.

  1. Take a Bus Tour

    • This is the most convenient way in which to see the Big Apple. A bus tour allows visitors to see most of Manhattan's bigger sites in the shortest amount of time. Many bus tours stop at certain sites and let visitors off to explore for a few minutes. Oftentimes bus tour companies, such as Gray Line New York Sightseeing, offer certain tours that allow passengers to hop on and hop off any time they wish throughout the day, or for multiple days, essentially becoming a guided public transportation service. Many tour companies exist throughout the city, each offering their own special tours. Tickets can many times be purchased online.

    See New York From Above

    • The best way to do this without dropping large amounts of cash on a helicopter tour is by taking the high-speed elevator to the 86th floor observation deck in the Empire State Building. Visitors can look out over the Manhattan and the surrounding boroughs through the windows or step out onto the outdoor promenade and feel New York's wind on their face. For an additional price, visitors can then go up to the observation deck on the 102nd floor for an even higher view of the city. Both observatories are open everyday of the year from 8 a.m. to 2 a.m., so visitors can watch the sunset and then see the city glow at night.
