International Airline Luggage Size and Weight Regulations

Luggage restrictions vary by airline. It is easy to go to the airport assuming you are well within the standard weight limits only to find you are actually over it and you have to pay extra. In addition, if you are taking two flights with two different airlines, you could find yourself complying with one airline but being in "excess" with the other. It's always important to check with your airline to get the most current information.

  1. Number of Bags Allowed

    • For international flights, most airlines allow you to bring two pieces of checked luggage. There are some exceptions, however. British Airways only allows one piece of checked luggage.

    Weight Restrictions

    • Most airlines limit their checked baggage weight to 70 lbs. per passenger. Passengers with luggage over that weight are subject to extra charges.

    Size Restrictions

    • The standard size restriction for checked baggage is 62 linear inches (total length+width+height).

    Excess Baggage Charges

    • Excess baggage charges are per flight and on a space-available basis, meaning that your baggage may not end up with you at your destination. Charges vary between airlines but are usually around $25.

    Carry-on Baggage

    • Airlines typically allow you to carry one bag on the plane. Most international flights also allow you one personal item, such as a handbag or laptop bag. Travelers should consult airlines for more information as the weight and size of allowable carry-on baggage varies drastically among airlines.
