How do I Get to an Amtrak From the SFO?

The nearest Amtrak outpost to San Francisco International Airport is the Amtrak Thruway stop near downtown San Francisco, which is 14 miles from SFO. The Thruway is not a train station, however. It's a bus station where Amtrak buses bring you to the closest Amtrak train station, which is in Emeryville, on the other side of the Bay. Call ahead once you've bought your ticket for a train that leaves from Emeryville, and Amtrak will add the Amtrak Thruway San Francisco-Emeryville bus to your reservation. Whether you decide to travel 14 miles to the Thruway or 24 miles to Emeryville station, getting to Amtrak is easy by public transportation or car.

  Walk to San Francisco International BART station.

  Get on the BART train going in the direction of Pittsburg/Bay Point.

  Stay on the train until you arrive at the Embarcadero BART station.

  Walk to the waiting room of 101 The Embarcadero, the Amtrak San Francisco station located in the Agricultural Building, just south of (and adjacent to) the Ferry Building.

  Get on the bus you've pre-arranged. The trip to Emeryville usually takes a little more than half an hour.
Getting to Amtrak Thruway in San Francisco By Car

  Depart from San Francisco International Airport.

  Take ramp right for US-101 North/Bayshore Fwy toward San Francisco.

  Take ramp right for I-280 North /John F. Foran Fwy/Southern Embarcadero toward the Port of San Francisco.

  Take ramp left. Keep straight onto King Street.

  Keep straight onto the Embarcadero. Arrive at 101 The Embarcadero, the Amtrak San Francisco station located in the Agricultural Building, just south of (and adjacent to) the Ferry Building. If you reach Pier 1, you've gone too far.

Getting to the Amtrak Station in Emeryville By Car

  Head northwest. Take the ramp onto US-101 North.

  Keep slight right at I-80 East. Take the exit onto I-580 E toward CA-24/Hayward/Stockton.

  Take the Jackson Street exit. Merge onto Fifth Street. Turn right at Jackson Street.
