How to Get an Indian Visa From the US

India requires all foreign visitors to have at least a tourist visa, and because India has no Visa on Arrival service, the visa must be obtained prior to arrival. The Embassy of India in the United States has outsourced all non-emergency visa applications to Travisa, so under all but the most unusual circumstances, visa applications should be sent to Travisa and not the Embassy. Applications through Travisa are conducted either in person at one of its regional centers or through the mail.

Instructions

    • 1

Call ahead to one of Travisa's regional centers if expedited visa service is needed. Travisa issues same-day visas only to Americans who make an appointment and file their applications in person, but same-day service is not guaranteed. Normal applications require between seven and nine days.

    • 2

Collect and inspect application materials, including a passport with at least six months of remaining validity, two passport photos, proof of address and a copy of your birth certificate. If you want your passport and visa returned to you by mail, you also must include a pre-paid airbill. Minors need a photocopy of a parent or legal guardian passport attached to their application.

    • 3

Obtain a money order for the required fees, payable to Travisa Outsourcing. Credit cards are accepted for in-person applications, but Travisa prefers money orders, and using one avoids any potential delay.

    • 4

Fill out an application. Travisa Outsourcing's website has an online form generator that must be used for any mail-in applications. If you appear in person, you either can fill out a form at the regional center or bring a pre-generated form with you.

    • 5

Mail the application to the nearest regional center, using a service with registered tracking, such as FedEx or the US Postal Service. In-person applications can be filed at a regional center from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. and from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.

    • 6

Return to the Travisa center between 4:30 p.m. and 6 p.m. on the designated day if you are not receiving your passport and visa returned to you by mail.
