How to Get a Visa for Dubai From the United States

Dubai is emerging as one of the most popular tourist destinations on the planet. Dubai hosts world class resorts, spas, golf courses and restaurants. The weather is sunny most of the year and it is known for glitz and excess. If you are a U.S. citizen and have a passport that is valid, you no longer need a tourist visa to travel to Dubai. However, if your stay will be longer than one month, you will need to get an extended stay visa. It can be obtained through the Embassy of the United Arab Emirates, in Washington, D.C.

      Log onto the Internet and direct your browser to the United Arab Emirates Embassy web site. (see Resources) and to the "Do I Need a Visa" link. Enter your information to see if you need to apply for the extended stay visa.

      Download and print two copies of the Emirates visa application.

      Complete the forms by typing them. All forms must be typed.

      If you are staying for more than 30 days, and are sponsored by an organization, list the organization name, contact information and the industry.

      If you are staying with, or are being sponsored by an individual for your extended stay, include their names, addresses, phone numbers and your relationship to them.

      Go to the Embassy and bring your valid U.S. passport, the fee, and your two completed visa application forms. Also bring two photocopies of your passport, and two 2-inch by 2-inch passport photos.

      Bring your valid round trip ticket as proof of departure from Dubai. If traveling with minor children, bring documentation that you are their guardian or parent. Bring a letter from your organization or individual inviting you to stay for the extended period of time.

      Ask for copies of your host's passport or residency permits, to present to the UAE Embassy, as well as the other documents. If you will be working for an organization, ask for a letter stating your position on the organization's letterhead.

      Write a cover letter to accompany all the required documents stating the purpose of your visit, the length of your stay and the dates you will be travelling. You must also write an introduction describing who you are.

      Bring a self-addressed, postage-paid envelope that has a tracking number. Fedex, UPS or U.S. Priority Post are the recommended methods.

      Go to the Embassy and be prepared to wait to present the documents. No appointments are accepted.

      Present the information to the Embassy representative. The UAE Embassy requires three days to process visa requests. If approved, your visa is good for up to ten years, and will permit you to stay for up to six months. The UAE Embassy will mail your visa and passport back to you in the prepaid envelope you supplied.
