How to Find a Location by a Rural Route Number

Postal rural delivery carriers travel a network of rural routes to deliver mail to roadside mailboxes. Rural delivery addresses contain a rural route number and a box number, for example "RR 2, Box 8." There are various free resources that can help you find the actual location for a rural route address, from the sheriff's office to the post office. For a fee, you can also hire a private investigator to help you with your search.

Contact the local sheriff's office. Sheriffs know their regions well, including the location of rural route addresses within that region. To protect people's privacy, they may first contact the residents at the rural address to get their consent before giving you the location. To find a regional sheriff's office, you can conduct an online search at Google. Enter "sheriff area code" (for example, "sheriff 80202"), and press the "Search" button. The sheriff's office (or offices) associated with that area code will display. Call, write, or visit the office in person, and respectfully request the location of a rural route address.

Contact the post office for that zip code, either by phone, letter, or in person, and request help locating the rural route address. To find a post office by zip code, go to usps.com and click "Locate a Post Office" in the top red bar. In the "Click in box to select service" menu, select "Post Office Locations." In the "City or Zip Code" field, enter the zip code from the rural route address. Press the "Search" button, and contact information for that post office (or offices) will display.

Contact the county assessor's office. Because county assessors' offices must evaluate property for taxation purposes (which often includes on-site property visits), they have location information for rural route addresses. To find the county name for the rural route address, go to Blackbookonline.info/bbo_citycountyconverter.aspx, enter the city and state, press the "Convert" button, and read the county name. To find contact information for that county assessor's office, go to the National Association of Counties website (naco.org). Under the "About Counties" tab in the top blue strip, select "Find a County" and follow the instructions. You can visit the assessor's office in person, or contact them by phone, email or letter.

Hire a private investigator. If you're having trouble finding the location for a rural route address, consider hiring a private investigator. Investigators have the resources and the skills to locate such information. To find an experienced investigator, contact the professional private investigator's association for your state.
