Siesta Key Florida Attractions

Siesta Key is located in Florida, but not by the famous Florida Keys. This island sits eight miles off the coast of Sarasota on the west coast of central Florida. Siesta Key is considered a barrier island. Because Siesta Key is not a part of the popular Florida Keys, it makes it a destination a little less crowded than the typically over-inhabited Keys.
  1. Drum Circle

    • Sundays offer the Siesta Key Sunday drum circle. Beginning an hour before sunset, the popular weekly event is not a traditional drum circle of Native Americans, but a jam session by a group of people who enjoy playing drums and other percussion instruments. Dancers and other street performers join in as the crowd grows. There is always at least one ceremonial fire lit. The drum circle happens on the Siesta Key Public Beach, one of three beaches on the island.

    Beaches

    • The beaches on Siesta key are unique in that the white sand is made up of 99% pure quartz. Not only does this make the sand glimmer but it also helps to keep the beach cool even in the heat of the day. At the Siesta Public Beach there are tennis courts, volleyball nets, and concession stands, with shops and restaurants all around.

    Golf

    • For those who enjoy golf, the county that Siesta Key is part of boasts over 80 golf courses. You can travel just over the bridge and choose the course you want to attack. Some of the courses are more difficult than others. Stoneybrook, an Arthur Hills designed course, is considered the most difficult in the area. Also designed by Arthur Hills is the Arnold Palmer Legacy at Lakewood Ranch. Misty Creek offers play more desirable for all levels.

    Myakka River State Park

    • Myakka River State Park is also quite close to Siesta Key. You can rent bicycles on Siesta and travel over the bridge to the river park. There you will find many trails through the wetlands and along the Myakka River. You can also rent canoes or go out on an airboat ride. The park is open until sunset, when you can travel back to Siesta Key for some of the island nightlife.

    Siesta Village

    • Siesta Village hosts a few bars and pubs. Daiquiri Deck is one of the popular hangouts, where you can enjoy dinner as well as drinks. The Siesta Beach Club is the closest thing to a sports bar on the island. With the many TV screens the bar provides, you can keep up with the current sporting events as you eat dinner or enjoy a beer.
