What to Do & Attractions to See in Washington DC

There is a wealth of things to see and do in our nation's capitol. A trip to Washington, D.C. is one every American should make at least once.
  1. Types

    • Museums, galleries, federal buildings, monuments and the National Zoo are all places you should include on your itinerary while in the District.

    Significance

    • Among memorials, the Washington Monument, the Lincoln Memorial and the Jefferson Memorial should be tops on your list. There are a number of others to visit, including the Vietnam War memorial and the Pentagon 9/11 memorial.

    Museums

    • The Smithsonian Museums offer you a wide selection of topics to explore, such as American history, air and space, American art and natural history.

    Lesser-known

    • Other places to visit that do not get the publicity of the major attractions include Ford's Theater, the Congressional Cemetery and the Bureau of Printing and Engraving.

    Warning

    • Public tours at the Federal Bureau of Investigation are closed, but you can get a sense of the bureau's history at the Newseum's "G-Men and Journalists" exhibit.
