Museums, galleries, federal buildings, monuments and the National Zoo are all places you should include on your itinerary while in the District.
Among memorials, the Washington Monument, the Lincoln Memorial and the Jefferson Memorial should be tops on your list. There are a number of others to visit, including the Vietnam War memorial and the Pentagon 9/11 memorial.
The Smithsonian Museums offer you a wide selection of topics to explore, such as American history, air and space, American art and natural history.
Other places to visit that do not get the publicity of the major attractions include Ford's Theater, the Congressional Cemetery and the Bureau of Printing and Engraving.
Public tours at the Federal Bureau of Investigation are closed, but you can get a sense of the bureau's history at the Newseum's "G-Men and Journalists" exhibit.
