Things to Do in Dam Square in Amsterdam

One of the oldest parts of Amsterdam, Dam Square (or "the Dam") was used as a central market in the 13th century. Today, this cobblestone square is still a meeting place for both locals and tourists, thanks to its central location. The Dam is anchored by its National Monument statue, erected in 1956 to commemorate Dutch soldiers who died during World War II. In addition to its pigeons, restaurants, shops, and occasional carnivals, the square is home to a number of popular Amsterdam attractions.
  1. Koninklijk Paleis (Royal Palace)

    • This 17th-century palace is no longer home to the royal family, but it is still used for state functions and is open to the public on varying days. Before visiting, check the palace's website to ensure it will be open that day. Special exhibitions are presented here throughout the year, and guided tours are offered to showcase the palace's architecture and history.

    Nieuwe Kerk (New Church)

    • Although this circa-1400 Gothic church burned down in the 1600s, it was beautifully restored and has served as a royal inauguration site since 1815. Besides admiring the stained glass windows, elaborate altar, and pipe organ, visitors will enjoy the many art exhibitions held here through the year. The church is open daily, and guided tours are available with advanced booking.

    Madame Tussaud's

    • Travelers who need something a bit more extravagant to fill their afternoon in the Dam will delight in the monstrous and very entertaining Madame Tussaud's wax museum, with its lifelike figures of famous musicians, movie stars, sports idols, and cultural icons. But even this attraction isn't without a dose of history; the Dutch 17th-century exhibit features roaring cannons in the war of liberation against Spain, Rembrandt and Van Gogh painting their masterpieces, and a stroll through the streets of Golden Age Amsterdam. The museum is open daily for self-guided tours.
