Attractions in Pine Mountain, Georgia

The town of Pine Mountain, Georgia, is located at the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, an hour southwest of Atlanta. The town was founded in 1882 as Chipley. President Franklin Delano Roosevelt often came to the area for warm water treatment for his paralysis, and loved to picnic at Dowdell's Knob in the state park now named after him.

    • Butts Mill Farm is an 80-acre fully operational farm originally established in the 1830s. Visitors can see the Old Grist Mill and covered bridge, and enjoy inner tube and go kart riding, a petting farm, pony rides, volleyball, miniature golf, hay rides and horseshoes.

    Callaway Gardens

    • Callaway Gardens is a 35,000-square-foot complex on 13,000 acres in the Appalachian Mountains. It is home to the world's largest azalea display, two 18-hole golf courses, a 10-mile bike trail, a tropical butterfly conservatory and a greenhouse complex with a 22-foot waterfall and more than 20,000 square feet of indoor floral displays. On Labor Day weekend, it hosts the Sky High Hot Air Balloon Festival.

    F.D. Roosevelt State Park

    • This 9,049-acre state park is Georgia's largest and boasts the excellent 23-mile Pine Mountain Trail, year-round boating and fishing on the 15-acre Lake Delano and summer swimming in Liberty Bell Pool. Roosevelt's Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) program built many of its facilities.

    • Visitors can see, feed and touch hundreds of animals, including the alligator, antelope, black bear, buffalo, camel, capuchin, coatimundi, elk, giraffe, hyena, kangaroo, liger, lion, rhinoceros, tiger, wolf and zebra.

    Roosevelt's Little White House Historic Site

    • Franklin Delano Roosevelt came to Warm Springs for warm water treatments for his paralysis. The six-room Little White House was where he stayed during his visits. The house looks much like it did on April 12, 1945, the day he died there.

    Roosevelt Stables

    • This stable provides old-fashioned horseback riding on more than 28 miles of marked horse trails winding through the picturesque F.D. Roosevelt State Park. It offers guided tours, one-hour rides and overnight rides, and is certified for badges by the Girl Scouts Association.
