Portland, Maine Tourist Attractions

The Portland, Maine, metro area was ranked by "Forbes" as the country's most livable city in 2009 based on quality of life criteria, such as crime rate and unemployment. It is also a good place to visit. The city in the southern part of the state has tourist attractions, ranging from history museums to whale watching.
  1. Maine Historical Society Museum

    • The Maine Historical Society Museum contains more than 15,000 items that relate to the state, including art, glass and ceramic, Native American artifacts, political memorabilia, tools and toys. The museum also features temporary special exhibits.

    Wadsworth--Longfellow House

    • The Wadsworth--Longfellow House is run by the Maine Historical Society Museum, and sits adjacent to the society's museum. Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, the famous nineteenth century poet, was born in Portland in 1807 and grew up in the house. Most of the household items and artifacts were used by the Wadsworth and Longfellow families in the 1800s. The tour includes the secluded Longfellow Garden behind the house.

    Portland Museum of Art

    • The Portland Museum of Art is part of the seven-member Maine Art Museum Trail. The museum has works from famous artists, including Winslow Homer, Claude Monet, Pablo Picasso and Pierre-Auguste Renoir. The other museums on the trail are the Bates College Museum of Art in Lewiston, the Bowdoin College Museum of Art in Brunswick, the Colby College Museum of Art in Waterville, the Farnsworth Art Museum in Rockland, the Ogunquit Museum of American Art in Ogunquit and the University of Maine Museum of Art in Bangor.

    Whale Watching

    • The Odyssey Whale Watch company offers boat tours off the southern Maine coast. It is recommended not to blink because visitors may spot humpback whales, finback whales, minke whales, north atlantic white-sided dolphins and basking sharks. A naturalist on board points out sea life as the boat passes. People can also take deep sea fishing trips.
