Things to Do in Fujairah

Mountainous Fujairah on the Gulf of Oman has some of the most scenic terrain in the emirates. The newest emirate, however, known mainly for business and trade, does lack some of the appeal of other coastal towns. As a result, many travel guides advise making this a starting point and moving on to the shore. However, if you are limited on time or have other constrictions, there are definitely a few ways to keep yourself entertained in Fujairah.
  1. Diving

    • To take advantage of diving in Fujairah, you will need to head to the hotels. Le Meridien Al Aqah Beach Resort, 50 kilometers from the town proper, is your most sophisticated choice. This stunning hotel, set against towering mountains, opens onto white sand beaches and sparkling water. Professionals here offer beginner diving lessons; for certified divers, there are old wrecks to explore. Also available are night dives and adventure day-long dives. The underwater terrain here is world-class, making this one of the most popular activities in Fujairah.

    Masafi's Friday Market

    • Souq al Juma, as it is known locally, is about 30 kilometers out of town but definitely worth a visit. Despite its name, the market is open from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. every day of the week. Whether or not you're in the market for produce, the market makes for a colorful experience. Locals advise visiting in the evening hours; at sundown, the landscape of the dunes and mountains is breathtaking.

    Bull Butting

    • If you are okay with the idea, bull butting can be an interesting game to observe. Centuries-old and very popular with local families in Fujairah, the spectacle starts off with 20 bulls in an enclosed area who attack each other. Winners move on to the next round. Visitors should know that there is always a chance bulls will charge spectators, so it is best to keep away from the front row.
