Going to Africa to Help With Hunger

Many African nations are in desperate need of food. The Hunger Project estimates that 32 percent of the people in sub-Saharan Africa are undernourished, and a disproportionate number of those suffering are children. Chronic illness resulting from malnutrition also plagues these poverty-stricken nations. Besides the lack of food, clean water supplies are limited. Some nations have fallen to this condition because of drought or war. Aid comes through world governments, private organizations and individuals. Some aid comes in the form of immediate relief, while other efforts intend to provide long-term solutions to the agricultural problems.

Choosing which organization to participate in does not have to be complicated. Most aid is on a volunteer basis, although some organizations give workers modest pay. Work is available in various fields of expertise, as well as unskilled assistance. Fields of expertise includes doctors, nurses, contractors, and agricultural- and environmental-experienced vocations. Some of the organizations seeking volunteers are:

      UN Volunteers (UNV)

      Peace Corps

      Voluntary Service Overseas (VSO)

      Cross-Cultural Solutions

Doctors Without Borders (Medecins Sans Frontiers)

      Student Partnership World-wide (SPW)

      Projects Abroad

Know what organizations provide to their volunteers. Most offer a choice of projects and destinations. Volunteers have an opportunity to work abroad and experience the day-to-day life of different cultures. Some organizations ask for a moderate program fee, which includes room and board for a specified period. Transportation is not included in these fees. Some organizations offer need-based scholarships to students. Other organizations offer training and the cost of overseas placement.
