Automotive Safety Checklist

The roads can be very dangerous when drivers do not adhere to safety precautions. This is especially true when drivers don't take the necessary measures to maintain their vehicles. An automotive safety checklist is beneficial for helping drivers see the safety methods required to maintain safe and trustworthy vehicles.
  1. Documentation

    • Have the appropriate documentation readily accessible. In general, this information should be kept on your person, or in the automobile itself. Documentation that promotes safe and responsible driving includes current car registration, proof of insurance, current state inspection sticker and a valid driver's license. These documents help law enforcement officers when they conduct routine traffic stops. This information also proves the vehicle is within regulations to be driven on the roadways, and shows that the rightful owner is operating the vehicle. Insurance documentation is handy when accidents occur, as it is a safety net for repairing damaged vehicles of either party.

    Tires

    • Tires must maintain good tread and air pressure to be considered safe for driving. Drivers should check tread and air pressure on a regular basis and take the necessary steps to repair or replace worn tires. Most local tire shops can evaluate tire pressure to determine whether air supply is adequate for safe driving. If tires are balding, have slick spots or have exposed wire, it is time to replace them.

    Lights

    • The proper lights are imperative for safe driving. Turning signal lights indicate when a driver is about to turn. Rear lights allow other drivers to discern when a driver is backing out. Brake lights let you know when a driver is stopping. If these lights are not in proper working order it may contribute to accidents on the road. Lights should be checked to determine if they are working for the needed purpose. Bulbs that are not working must be replaced. If blown fuses are the cause of signals and lights not functioning properly, they should also be replaced. At times lights may malfunction due to a short in wiring. If this is the case, wiring should be repaired or replaced as quickly as possible.

    Safety Belts

    • Safety belts are known to be a life-saving factor in serious accidents. For this reason, it is important that safety belts work properly at all times. All persons in the car should have access to a safety belt. If standard safety belts don't extend enough for certain individuals, it is advisable to purchase safety belt extenders for the make and model of the automobile.

    Brakes

    • Brakes that grind and squeal can put drivers and passengers in danger when you need to make a quick stop. Brake pads and shoes should be inspected for wear and tear to ensure they are performing at the maximum capacity. Pads and shoes generally have to be replaced on a periodic basis.

    Wipers and Mirrors

    • Inspect windshield wipers to ensure they function in proper order; ensure the rubber is good and the washer squirts appropriately. Also verify that the washer dispenser is full of windshield washer fluid. Make sure rear-view mirrors are aligned where you can see at least 200 feet behind the automobile at all times.
