How to Find Out If a Charter Airline Is Safe

Charter airlines are slightly more difficult to obtain information about than commercial airlines because fewer passengers frequent them and they are less well-known in general. Though the cost of flying is usually greater with a chartered airplane, it does not necessarily mean that it is significantly safer. As such, it is necessary to seek out information about the safety of a charter airline before flying.

Find your charter airline service through the National Aviation Business Association. NABA is the U.S.'s national consortium of general airline service providers, which includes chartered airlines as well as commercial airlines. NABA's database of approved aviators and its consumer protection guidebook will help you make an educated decision regarding which airlines are both safe and capable of providing the specific services you need.

Ask the charter airline's representative a number of safety-related questions. According to the Federal Aviation Administration, there are at least five questions that you should ask before choosing an airline. First, "Do you hold a current FAA Air Carrier Operating Certificate?" Second, "What is the name of the company as it appears on the certificate?" Third, "What is the certificate number?" Fourth, "What is the name and telephone number of the FAA Flight Standards District Office (FSDO) and who is the FAA Principle Operations Inspector overseeing your operation?" Fifth, if you are traveling abroad, "Is your company FAA authorized to conduct international operations to (your international destination)?" Contact your local Flight Standards District Office to double-check the information.

Read reviews of the charter airline, which should be available on several popular review websites. For example, ReviewCentre.com, Epinions.com and Airlinequality.com are three such websites. At either website, simply type the name of the charter airline into the search box and press "Enter."
