How to Register With State Department Embassies Abroad

When you are planning to travel overseas for an extended amount of time, you should register with the U.S. Embassy. It may seem unnecessary, but your registration likely will pay off if you meet any kind of trouble while visiting or living in a foreign country. U.S. Embassies worldwide like to look out for U.S. citizens--and they do. The U.S. State Department reports that U.S. embassies partner with "nearly 200,000 Americans each year who are victims of crime, accident, or illness, or whose family and friends need to contact them in an emergency."

  1. How to Register With State Department Embassies Abroad

    • 1

Register online. The U.S. State Department has a website devoted specifically for registering your trip abroad and registering with the in-country U.S. Embassy. The service is free, and the website interface is easy to navigate. You'll be prompted to set up an account, to fill out personal contact information and to register your trip or overseas residence information. The entire process likely will take you less than 15 minutes.

    • 2

Locate your passport. You'll be asked to enter your passport number and other key information found inside that small blue book, so have it with you when you sit down at the computer.

    • 3

Opt to receive "travel warnings." This website also will give you the option of receiving email warnings about the country you are learning to navigate.

    • 4

If you forget to register online, visit the U.S. Embassy shortly after you reach your overseas destination. You will be able to meet with embassy staff and register your personal information. A bonus is becoming familiar with the consular services and the embassy building.
