The weather in Cuba is often warm and muggy. Due to these factors, visitors should pack lightweight clothes that can be layered. Stick to cotton materials in summer and a light sweater or overcoat in winter. Shoes are an important aspect of any vacation, but can be especially important while sightseeing in Cuba. Most main streets, and particularly those near historic sites are cobblestone and often uneven. To accommodate this, sturdy, flat shoes that are good for walking are a must. For the most part, avoid heels while sightseeing.
Most basic toiletries are widely available in town, including basics like toothpaste, soap and toilet paper. Other things, including aspirin, sun block, bug spray and contact lens solution can be more difficult to find. Reading material is often in Spanish and is difficult to find in any other language. Visitors should bring their own beach wear and towels, as what is available is often over priced and sometimes low quality. Personal snorkel gear is a must, as are a flashlight for potential blackouts, alarm clock and universal plug. Basics, including sun screen, sunglasses, makeup and mosquito repellant are part of any well-stocked suitcase.
This list changes frequently and Cuba has strict rules for those coming into the country. The majority of electric devices, including freezers, personal air conditioners and irons are prohibited, as are any additional parts for these appliances. Explosives, narcotics, pornography and any item that may be used against national security are strictly monitored. GPS systems, walkie-talkies, some cordless phones and similar devices are also banned.
All visitors, regardless of home country should make copies of their passport and additional travel documents (photo ID, etc.) Theft can be a problem, and all valuables should be stored in an in-room safe or kept on your person with a travel belt. Always know how to contact the proper authorities in case these items are lost, misplaced or stolen. Since GPS systems are not allowed, all visitors should bring a good map of major cities. Street signs are not common and not always maintained, making them difficult to read.
