How to Transport Motorcycles by Truck

The most important thing when transporting motorcycles by truck is to make sure they are completely secure. The most difficult part can often be loading the motorcycle into the truck, but once you get that accomplished, securing your bike is not difficult if you correctly follow a few simple procedures.

Things You'll Need

  • Hauling straps (rachet or cam buckle preferred)

Instructions

Roll the motorcycle into the truck. A loading dock is perfect for the job, but a ramp will also work. Position the bike so the front tire touches the front of the truck bed. The bike should be equal distance from both sides of the truck. Put the parking brake on, if it has one, and put down the kickstand.

Attach the front of the bike to the truck a with a medium-duty, tie-down hauling strap. The strap should first be attached to a tie-down cleat in the bed of the truck. The strap then goes through the risers underneath the handlebars. The other end of the strap is then attached to the tie-down cleat on the other side of the truck. Tighten the strap so it pulls the bike in a forward and downward direction. The two most common types of tie-down straps come in ratchet and cam buckle styles. Cam buckles hold the bike tight by creating friction as the strap passes though a spring-loaded buckle. Ratchet straps work in the same way, but have a ratchet buckle that tightens the strap.

Compress the fork suspension halfway down and secure the bike in place.

    • 4

Strap down the rear end of the bike with a strap with the same method described above so the bike can not move laterally. Picking a area high on the bike frame to attach the strap improves stability.

Tighten the straps to make sure they are as secure as possible. Take the truck for for a test ride around the block to make sure the bike does not move.
