Persepolis is an ancient Persian city, now in ruins, about 60 km northeast of the modern city of Shiraz, Iran. The remains of Persepolis are now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Persepolis was the ceremonial capital of the Achaemenid Empire (ca. 550–330 BC), and remains one of the most prestigious examples of ancient Persian architecture. Persepolis is situated in a wide, arid valley, 1,200 metres above sea level. The site measures 125,000 square metres and is composed of several terraces and palaces. The main terraces are the Apadana, which was the largest palace, the Hall of a Hundred Columns, and the Treasury.
