How to Plan a Road Trip Across the United States

Traveling across the United States by car is a great way to see the diverse landscapes and attractions throughout America. Summer is most common for road-tripping, yet fall and winter can be a great time to take a southern route, and if you travel in spring you can avoid summer traffic and higher hotel rates. Planning your journey on a road map used to be the most common way to prepare for such a trip, but today many online travel planning tools can help you find places to stay and things to see. Some tools can even help you find roads under construction or shut down, so you can avoid them on your trip.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose a trip planner on line, like the Rand McNally Road Trip Planner (Reference 1) or the AAA TripTik Planner (Reference 2). Each online trip planner has slightly different options, functionality, and interface, but they all do primarily the same thing.

    • 2

Enter your starting point and final destination into the travel planner. If you are heading completely across the country, you might start in Los Angeles, San Francisco, or Seattle and make your way to New York, Washington, D.C., or Miami. Make sure to plan a trip that's feasible for the amount of time you have so you won't need to rush to get from point A to B.

    • 3

Select additional cities where you'd like to stop during your trip by clicking them on the map or clicking "Add a Destination."

    • 4

Choose to view information about cities, hotels, attractions, campgrounds, national parks, restaurants, gas stations, or road construction along your route from the options listed on the side bar or drop-down menu.

    • 5

Make reservations or add points of interest to your route and refresh the directions to reflect all the information for your trip.

    • 6

Print out your customized travel map and finalize the details for your trip.
