Delta Airlines Luggage Information

Delta transports more than 160 million passengers a year to 351 destinations around the world, according to the company's website. To ensure safe and efficient travel, the airline has established luggage policies based on its own operations and in cooperation with the Transportation Security Administration (TSA). All fees, rules and restrictions are valid as of October 2010, and are subject to change upon the airline's discretion.
  1. Carry on Luggage

    • Delta allows passengers to carry on one bag and one personal item. A personal item can be a purse, briefcase, diaper bag, camera bag or laptop bag. Certain items like jackets, duty free merchandise, wheelchairs, crutches, and food and drink purchased after a security checkpoint may also be brought on board and do not count as a personal item.

Carry on luggage must fit under the seat or in the overhead bin. Generally, this luggage will measure no more than 22 inches long by 14 inches wide by 9 inches tall, or 45 inches total. There are no fees for carry on luggage, but a fee will be assessed if the bag does not meet the size restrictions and has to be checked at the gate.

    Checked Luggage

    • Delta charges Economy class passengers traveling within the United States, Canada, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands a fee to check bags. This fee can be reduced if the passenger checks their bags online before arriving at the airport. For international travel, Delta does not charge passengers to check their first bag. Depending on the location, the airline may also allow international passengers to check a second bag for free. In addition, first class and business class passengers as well as rewards members and military personnel can check two to four bags for free.

Checked luggage should be no more than 50 pounds and 62 inches total. Anything more will be assessed an additional fee.

    Liability

    • Delta accepts limited liability for luggage that is lost, delayed or damaged. Passengers have the option to purchase additional liability coverage. There is no liability assumed by Delta for minor damage to luggage such as scratches or dents. Delta also takes no responsibility for art, jewelry, electronics, medications, important papers and other valuables. Passengers are advised to travel with these types of items.

    Liquids

    • Delta follows TSA's rules for liquids. Passengers wishing to carry on any liquids must contain them in one clear, resealable plastic bag either 1 quart or 1 liter in size. Individual liquids in the bag must be 3.4 ounces or less. Baby formula and milk and medications are exempt from this rule, but must be declared at the security checkpoint.
