Things Needed for a Vacation to Jamaica

Packing for a vacation, even when you want your trip to feel completely carefree and casual, requires planning and a basic knowledge of the weather and the types of activities you will be doing. Jamaica is tropical; the temperatures are high, the air can be humid and rainfall and even the occasional quickly passing storm can be expected. With the right planning and packing, you will be ready for a wonderful vacation regardless of what comes your way.
  1. The Right Luggage

    • Purchase high-quality, durable luggage that will withstand travel, keeping your treasured items safe. Mark your luggage so it is set apart from other travelers' and you can identify it quickly. Check into current air travel requirements regarding items such as toiletries so you can be prepared for airport security screening.

    Appropriate Clothing

    • Since Jamaica is hot, be prepared with clothing that is not only light in color but also light in weight. Linen is soft and airy fabric that is lovely for a trip to Jamaica. Plan to have at least three different looks for each day: a bathing suit, a light top with a skirt or shorts for during the day for women and shorts and a T-shirt for men, and then something to wear for dinner. If you are planning to be very casual at night as well, then your daywear can transfer into the night. Women may choose to pack several light sundresses (matte jersey is a fantastic fabric for this purpose; it is airy and doesn't wrinkle easily). For shoes, flip-flops are a stylish and simple choice for both men and women. Pack several different styles, but be sure to pack at least one nice pair of shoes in case you attend a fancy event.

    Eye and Skin Protection

    • SPF is always important, but it is especially so when visiting Jamaica. Many people spend months covered up and then bare it all out on the beach. While enjoying the sun can make you feel healthy and relaxed, always wear SPF 30 or higher. Reapply your sunscreen often, especially after swimming. Choose a brand that is waterproof and not too greasy. Bring at least one pair of sunglasses.

    Extras

    • Don't forget to pack your camera, film and a laundry bag (or trash bag) for dirty laundry. Slippers or socks for the hotel room are also a good idea. Bringing a journal or diary with you is a great way to keep track of special moments while on vacation.

    Identification

    • Per government regulation, all Americans traveling by air outside of the United States are required to show a valid passport or other approved travel document, so be sure you have your passport along with a valid driver's license or ID.
