How to Pack a Cooler Using Dry Ice

Coolers are ideal for the beach, road trips or even camping; but without ice your food may spoil more quickly. Dry ice is made of frozen carbon dioxide and normally comes in 10-inch squares. Dry ice can be used to keep your food frozen for longer periods of time compared to traditional ice packs. You must have a cooler with a water drain (or similar) for the gases to escape, or the lid of your cooler may pop.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine the length of time the dry ice will be needed. Depending on the size of the ice chest, you will need up to 20 pounds of dry ice for every 24-hour period.

    • 2

Pick up the dry ice from the facility. Always try to pick up the dry ice close to the time needed.

    • 3

Place the food in the ice chest. Put frozen food in first and keep non-frozen food separately.

    • 4

Position the dry ice on top of the food. Fill up the empty space with balled up newspaper or foam until the ice chest is filled. The filler keeps the dry ice from melting too quickly. Put on cotton gloves before handling the dry ice.
