How to Pack for a Winter Trip to Southern Australia

Winter for Australia is May through August, an important factor to keep in mind when leaving from the hot summer temperatures of the US. Southern temperatures remain, for the most part, fairly mild. The exception to this is Victoria and Tasmania, whose temperatures can get downright cold, especially at night. Use these tips as you pack up for your trip.

Instructions

    • 1

Pack long-sleeved shirts and sweaters to wear throughout the day. Depending on which month you go in and where you visit while there, this may not be necessary and you might get away with three-quarter sleeve tees or even short-sleeved shirts. Make sure you pack plenty of the warmer duds, though, just in case.

    • 2

Take a warm coat, gloves, hat and scarf for a visit to Victoria or Tasmania. Temperatures can dip into the forties and fifties, and when you're out walking along the beach and enjoying the sunset, you don't want to be constantly reminded of how cold you are.

    • 3

Stick some ski gear into your luggage if you think you might be interested in hitting the slopes at the popular resorts of the Great Dividing Range.

    • 4

Select pants for warmth and comfort. Jeans and khaki slacks are appropriate choices, as are a versatile pair of black pants. Don't include anything that will be too tight or constricting to walk around in.

    • 5

Include, as always, a comfortable pair of shoes that will take you over various terrains.

    • 6

Bring a few trendier items to wear when going out at night. It may be cold, but you will still want to look good as you hit the town with the natives.

    • 7

Go prepared with proper attire. Clothing in Australia is generally expensive, so you do not want to be stuck having to buy sweaters or a coat when you arrive. Even if you only take one or two sweatshirts with you, these can be re-worn and layered over tee shirts if necessary.
