Though the average high is 71 degrees Fahrenheit and the low 47, you’ll still want to check the weather before you head to the sunshine state in January. Central Florida winters can be unpredictable; the record low dipped to 18 degrees in 1985, while the record high topped 89 degrees in 2006. It wouldn’t be unusual to enjoy Magic Kingdom in 80-degree weather one day and meander Epcot in the 60s the next. That’s when those light layers come in handy.
Layers are the key to a Central Florida winter and successful January Disney trip. Start on the bottom with a comfortable pair of jeans and work your way up with layering tank tops, T-shirts, a light sweater or a sweatshirt. It’s common to enjoy the park and the sunshine in a tank top during the day, but you’ll want that sweatshirt once the sun sets and you grab your seats for Fantasmic -- the nighttime fireworks extravaganza at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. You can easily tie the sweater around your waist or stow it in a small backpack or locker near the front of the park for safekeeping during the day.
Disney requires hours upon hours of walking and standing. It’s imperative you wear comfortable walking shoes, otherwise your feet may be screaming before you queue up for the second ride. Athletic shoes, tennis shoes, boat shoes or boots are all safe bets for this time of year. Flip-flops, sandals with no support, or loose slip-on shoes can leave your feet chilly and can slide off during riding.
The Orlando area averages less than 3 inches of rain for the entire month of January, so an afternoon shower isn’t out of the question, though it is unlikely. A full waterproof raincoat isn’t necessary, but packing a light water-resistant windbreaker or shell is a good idea.
The sun still shines on the sunshine state even in the middle of January. Sunscreen is a necessity when visiting Disney World, regardless of season. Hats can protect your scalp and face from the sun’s damaging rays, but leave them with a non-rider on drop rides such as Splash Mountain, lest they go flying. You can also use a light, compact scarf for sun protection. Most fit in a small backpack or purse and double as a blanket during the parade.
